Resident from Kloten nominated for Make-up artist Award
"Make-up helped me improve my German"
Raiza Hauser from Kloten has been nominated for the largest national Make-up Artist Award. The 33-year-old hopes to gain a home advantage when she competes against 16 rivals from all over Switzerland at the "Picture of the Year" in Kloten on 30 November.
Interview: Jessica Frei
Raiza, you're nominated for the Picture of the Year. What kind of award is it?
The best up-and-coming make-up artists are nominated annually for the "Picture of the Year", also known as Pofty. It is awarded by the Face Design Make-up Artist School to a make-up artist who has completed his/her make-up artist training in the last twelve months and who convinced with a particularly successful make-up at the final examination. The award ceremony will take place on the 30th of November at the Floor Club in Kloten, where a three-member jury and the audience will decide who can go home as the lucky winner.
At least your way home isn't far. You have been living in Kloten for 5 years…
Yes, that's right - I have a home advantage in terms of distance. And of course, I have tried to mobilize as many people as possible from my environment who will support me locally. In recent years I have always been a spectator at the award night. The fact that I am now nominated myself makes me proud. But the competition is tough and there will certainly be a head-to-head race.
You're a trained industrial engineer. How did you come to apply makeup?
I have always had a great passion for colors and have liked to paint. In Panama, where I come from, however, art is a rather breadless business and my parents felt that I better learn a 'real' education. That's why I first graduated with a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering. This finally led me to Switzerland. The company I worked for then sent me to Lausanne for a year. There I met my current husband. After we had a long-distance relationship for years, I finally moved to Switzerland in 2014 and had to learn German.
How does that have anything to do with makeup?
I completed one German course after the other and finished them all with the highest scores. But I still couldn't speak fluently. I wanted to learn the language the way children do: In a playful way in daily contact with people and combined with something I enjoy. That's when my passion for colors came to mind again. Thanks to my training as a certified make-up artist, I was finally able to live out my artistic streak and improve my German at the same time. I couldn't have dreamed of a better way. I simply love to reach into the paint pot and be creative! Besides, applying makeup relaxes me a lot.
How does your professional vision as a make-up artist look like?
It would be my wish to continue to work 80% in my old profession as an industrial engineer, but also to build up a second mainstay as a make-up artist and to train myself further in the future. I simply need this creative balance as part of my everyday life. I would love to work for film or theatre projects or events, but I am open to many things. There aren't too many jobs in this area. Winning the "Picture of the Year" would certainly be a good door opener.
Back to the "Picture of the Year": You are nominated for a makeup look with the title "What a Feeling". What inspired you?
To be honest, I didn't have a specific look in my head at the beginning, but just thought about which colors I wanted to use. When you make up, you always have to respect the face of the person you're making up and create a look around it. There's no point in wanting to transform someone. In this case, the result is a daring and colorful look reminiscent of the 80s. But unlike most of the others, I didn't choose a theme beforehand, but simply applied the makeup and defined the title for the look afterwards. "What a Feeling" was a perfect fit.
What does your personal beauty routine look like?
From my point of view, care and a lot of sleep are the be-all and end-all for a healthy and fresh appearance. I use a cleansing lotion and moisturizer in the morning and evening and have been using a high sun block since I was 15 years old. I would also recommend every woman, if she feels comfortable with it, to take a little rest and not wear make-up every day. I do that same myself. I only conceal my dark circles under the eyes with a little concealer.
The "Picture of the Year" award will take place on 30 November at 8 p.m. in the Floor Club in Kloten and will be moderated by Marco Fritsche. All tickets are already sold out. The Audience Award will be presented on the basis of an online voting process lasting from 11 to 28 November. You can vote for the look "What a Feeling" by Raiza Hauser at www.pofty.ch.
